July 13, 2006 - Star Fox is looking to make his DS debut with Starfox Command which will be taking fan boys back to their original roots, flying the arwing. Fox McCloud along with team mates Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad are reforming team Star Fox as a the Lylat system is now under a direct threat from the new emperor on Planet Venom. A New form of creatures called anglor have been appearing from the planet's acidic oceans. All surrounding planets in the Lylat system have come under attack, Team Star Fox is back to restore peace to the universe.
Along with Team Star Fox you can expect many familiar faces to make an appearance such as Team Star Wolf from the N64 Version as well as Krystal from Star Fox Adventures for the gamecube. It is hard to tell whether Fox is in love with Krystal as he left her so his enemies would not become hers.
Star Fox is still far from being what it used to be with its new control scheme which has been built around the touch screen. The touch screen will act as your cockpit allowing you to fly based on the radar situated in the middle of the screen. Touching any of the buttons will activate your primary weapons, while everything else is handled with the stylus. You move around the world by dragging the stylus across the radar display. Double tapping the top portion of the radar causes you to activate your boost, while tapping the bottom portion will cause you to decrease in speed. The bombs are also accessed via the cockpit, but rather than pointing and shooting the explosive you just drag and drop onto the radar where you wish for it to detonate.
The advanced abilities also remain in the game, holding down a button will cause you to lock on and upon release a homing missile will take to the sky. Rolling, U-Turns and Flipping make a come back. You roll from side to side by sliding the stylus along the radar, which allows you to avoid shots as well as deflect on coming fire. Deflecting fire will give you time bonuses as most of the areas have a time limit for you to clear them. U-Turns and Flips have their own nifty button on either side of the radar for easier access.
The command part of the title comes from the latest addition to gameplay. You are given the ability to control all the starships in your fleet and to use the effectively to protect the Great Fox. Between each battle you will be provided with the basic flight plan for all the arwing and you can draw new battle plans up using the stylus. Making yourself aware of how far each ship can fly based on fuel remaining a Turn-Based strategy game will begin to unfold where you will plan your route and then so will the enemy. Make sure to keep a watchful eye on the Great Fox, since straying to far away or failing in the battle sequence ahead may cause the Great Fox to face defeat. It is a welcome addition to the game taking the stress off the air battles.
Thankfully Star Fox Command is being released on the DS which will allow for 8 players, battles with the option of 15 aircraft, using the wireless connection. Not only is there wireless support there is also WiFi which allows for up to 4 players to play across the net.
While a lot of details on Star Fox Command have yet to be released, it still looks like a promising game and you may want to take command of this game when it hits store shelves. |
