What is E3?

You know those times when you get phone calls or friends run up to you and scream at you, “GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND OUT!” Well that information more than likely came from E3 and they have stumbled across it on some news network.

While chatting with people we’ve come to notice that not a whole lot of people know what E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) even is. Electronic Entertainment Expo commonly known as E3 is an annual trade show for the computer and video games industry presented by the Entertainment Software Association. It is only open to game industry professionals, journalists, and guests of exhibitors, such as celebrities. As of 2007, E3 will be invitation-only; meaning that instead of around 60,000 people at E3 there will only be 5,000. The reason for this change is to allow for a more intimate atmosphere where business will be emphasized. A separate conference called Entertainment for All Expo has been created to accommodate the public demand for a major, annual video game event.

The creators of the current generation consoles also let out the biggest secrets they may have been working on. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are all respectively given slots to hold press conferences where they reveal marketing strategies and all the new services and games they will have to offer throughout the year. Since the current generation consoles are already out you can be sure this year they will concentrate on Software and Games.

E3 was previously held in the third week of May of each year at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles. The show is now held in Santa Monica, California from July 11 to July 13. On July 31, 2006, it was announced that the expo would be downsized and restructured but that doesn’t stop the massive amounts of information that pours out of this event to the point you are guaranteed to lose track of all the sweet games and new stuff coming your way. October 13, 2006 marked the new format of the show being detailed. Essentially, the E3 "Trade Show" was replaced with a much lower-key and inaccessible event or series of events known as the E3 Media and Business Summit.

Your head may just explode.
