New Super Mario Bros. Secrets, and the Shame of Getting PINK'D

"Working" at Nintendo has its perks. While I was slaving away earlier this week doing some Pokémon Mystery Dungeon "research," my boss's boss's boss strolls up to me and dishes out an awesome code for New Super Mario Bros. I revealed this gem earlier this week at the Nintendo NSider Forums, and here it is again for everyone who may have missed it:

Secret Challenge Mode

The secret Challenge Mode in New Super Mario Bros. allows you to replay levels you've completed in a new way. In Challenge Mode, the screen will not scroll to the left. So, if you pass up something good, you can't backtrack to pick it up (like in the original Super Mario Bros.). This makes the game even more challenging! Here's how it works:

1. Complete the game (see the ending at least once).

2. On the world map screen, press Start to pause the game.

3. Enter the following code: L, R, L, R, X, X, Y, Y.

4. If you enter the code correctly, a message will appear announcing that you have accessed the secret Challenge Mode. A yellow arrow will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, indicating that Challenge Mode is activated. Note that Challenge Mode can only be played in areas that you have completed.

Also, you may have heard of this trick already, but if you beat the game you'll learn a command that allows you to play as Luigi. Luigi's abilities are identical to Mario's, but it's fun to switch things up as Luigi.

And by the way ... have you tried touching the names on the credits as they roll by? Click here to discuss this code at the Nintendo NSider Forums.

PINK'D

Attention fellow Kirby fans! I'm pleased to announce that our heroic pink friend is returning to 4KIDS.TV this Saturday at 10:30 am. Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episodes will be airing this summer, so bust out your cereal spoons and get ready to inhale your breakfast Kirby style.

Speaking of Kirby, I don't think I've ever shown anyone this picture of my humble cubicle after being "Pink'd" by a mysterious group of Kirby-centric guerilla marketers here at Nintendo:

The humiliation! I was finding shards of pink ribbon around my desk for months ..."
